Από τον τύπο τους:

More than 100 Bangladeshi garment factories were forced to shut on Monday as thousands of workers protested to demand a $100 a month minimum wage and about 50 people were injured in clashes, police and witnesses said.

Garments are a vital sector for Bangladesh and its low wages and duty-free access to Western markets have helped make it the world’s second-largest apparel exporter after China.

But the $20 billion industry, which supplies many Western brands, has been under a spotlight after a series of deadly incidents including the collapse of a building housing factories in April that killed more than 1,130 people.

Workers took to the streets for a third day on Monday, blocking major roads and attacking some vehicles in the Gazipur and Savar industrial zones, on the outskirts of the capital, Dhaka.

At least 50 people, including some policemen, were injured, witnesses and police said, as police fired teargas and rubber bullets, and workers responded by throwing broken bricks.

Some workers also vandalised factories, witnesses said.

Dhaka: Hundreds of workers of a readymade garment factory blocked a road in the capital city’s Hatirpool area on Sunday afternoon. The protesters also engaged in clashes with policemen, demanding their wage for August in full, festival bonus and other dues. As the workers took to the Hatirpool road halting the traffic movement, sporadic clashes broke out as policemen tried to disperse the agitated workers. “Although we were told earlier that the authorities would pay us by 5pm, they failed to do so,” said Nazma Ahkter, a worker of TS Fashions. She said when they asked the authorities, they were told that the money, which was drawn from a bank, had been snatched away by a gang of muggers in the capital’s Paribagh. “As the news of the money being snatched was spread among the workers, we came down to the road,” she said. Kalabagan police station officer-in-charge Enamul Haq said they resorted to charging batons to free the roads. A gang of muggers allegedly took Tk3m from Mozammel Haque, the owner of TS Fashions, soon after he drew the amount from a branch of a commercial scheduled bank in the capital’s Paribagh area.

Shahbagh police arrested Mozammel’s driver Azizul Huq in this connection.

Συγκρούσεις στο  Μπαγκλαντές και νέος “αντιτρομοκρατικός” από το κράτος (από τον αστικό τύπο):

Bangladesh police yesterday fired rubber bullets and tear gas at thousands of garment workers protesting for better benefits in the capital Dhaka.

The clashes occurred in Dhaka’s Tejgaon industrial area after about 5,000 workers from Utah Fashions went on the rampage when they found the owners had closed the factory rejecting their demand for a hike in lunch and attendance bills.

“They staged a sit-in blocking a road. The factory management and police have asked the workers to clear the road. But they became unruly and smashed vehicles and factory windows,” local police chief Monir Uz Zaman said.

The protesters were dispersed after “police fired rubber bullets and tear gas at them,” Zaman said, adding several people were injured.

Police in Dhaka Medical College Hospital said at least one worker was brought into the hospital with injuries from a rubber bullet.

In a separate but similar incident in Gazipur district north of Dhaka, up to 2,000 workers from the Uni Gears factory clashed with police after the authorities shut the plant indefinitely.

“The workers blocked a key highway and threw stones at police. We fired tear gas to disperse them,” Gazipur police spokesman Mosharraf Hossain said.

Hossain said the owners closed the plant following days of protests by the workers demanding increases in perks and bonuses.

Bangladesh’s $20bn garment industry, the world’s second largest after China, has witnessed weeks of labour protests over pay hikes and better safety since a massive building collapse killed 1,129 factory workers outside Dhaka in April.

Μπαγκλαντές: Η μάχη συνεχίζεται…

workers-rights
