Strikes at Lufthansa, strikes in bus services, trash collectors, bus drivers, teachers and nurses, and strikes at Amazon. Deutschland, was ist los?
Ver.di, the mass service workers union, is organizing these strikes, taking advantage of Germany’s position right now in Europe, its low unemployment rate, its labor laws. Their slogan is “Wir sind es wert.” It means “We are worth it.” But are we? At the same time, german ministers are discussing making a law that would deport eu-citizens who are unemployed after 3 months back to their country of origin. Unlike most countries in europe and north america, germany has had no popular squares movement of youth and disaffected proles, no wild riots of the poor, no nothing. Instead, some good old strikes for higher wages with moderate success. Whereas in other countries, mass protests and occupations occur while the country’s economy stays mostly unaffected, in germany the economy is directly targeted, shutting down airlines, bus services, logistics centers, yet there are no mass movements to amplify it. When klassenkampf extends these strikes to society at large, then we’d be really es wert.

For three nights in a row there have been heavy riots in Hamburg-Altona. On Thursday evening a mob attacked policemen. Last night they burned cars and hurled stones.
About 150 young people gathered Friday night in Chemnitz Street and in Holsten Street. “They wanted to let loose,” said a police spokesman. First the rioters only lit firecrackers; later they torched cars.
In Karl Wolff Street a car was completely gutted. Another car was set on fire in Hospital Street, but was able to be extinguished. Some time later the tires of another car were burning. More than 100 police officers were out in force. They used pepper spray against the rioters. In response the mob hurled stones at the officers. A 21-year-old man was arrested.
The following night on Sunday again around 80 young people gathered in Holsten Street, and fireworks were ignited again — luckily nothing more happened on the third night of riots. “The situation has become very calm,” said the spokesman for Hamburg police on Sunday morning.
The riots started on Thursday night when a group of youths blinded car drivers with a laser pointer. The police moved in – and suddenly saw a group of over 150 people moving towards them. 16 rioters were detained.
There was an aggressive mood and the situation escalated.

Escalation and police kettle were evidently planned beforehand / police headquarters in Wiesbaden does not respond to the far reaching concessions of the demonstrators
Without any reason the police is currently using massive violence against the participants of the Blockupy demonstration in the police kettle. “The strategy of the police is evident: They want to escalate the situation. The demonstrators made far reaching concessions in the negotiations, however the police headquarter refuses any kind of cooperation”, says Blockupy speaker Roland Suess. “The political responsibility for preventing a legally approved demonstration lies in Wiesbaden.”
