Riot police were deployed as angry miners set fire to equipment and barricaded roads in Valle Del Cauca. Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos declared he would not tolerate the closure of a single highway in the country while calling for dialogue to end the conflict.

[Juan Manuel Santos, Colombian President]:
“I want to tell the miners, I will happily hold talks with you as will my administration. If you want to strike, go ahead, this government respects social protest. I will not allow and I reiterated it this morning to the defence minister, to the generals of the police and the army: these strikes may not block any road whatsoever.”

With the demonstration spreading to other mining areas of the country, protesters say they will stay put until their demands are heard.

[Alvaro Torres, Protester]:
“We are here indefinitely because they have to listen to us and they have to send someone to talk with us. We are willing to hold talks, not pridefully like the President, since he has his meals guaranteed and we don’t.”

Since the verdict came in Saturday (July 13th), there has been a wave of protests and small riots in several cities. Demonstrations occurred in LA, Oakland, San Francisco,  Philadelphia,  New York, Chicago, Houston, Milwaukee, Seattle, Portland, North Carolina and other places. Most of these demos remained more or less passive events but several become more confrontational and violent. In Los Angeles, protesters blocked the interstate highway near Crenshaw Boulevard (historically black area of LA) and confronted the police. Last night, marchers there attempted to loot a Walmart store and smashed windows at other business.

I live in Oakland, so I can only really report on the composition and activity of events here. On Saturday night, a small crowd trashed the gentrified “Uptown” neighborhood (yuppie restaurants and hipster shops) and attacked police vehicles in a march lasting a couple of hours. Sunday night, some small leftist groups (mostly the Revolutionary Communist Party, a cultish Maoist group with little real influence) organized two different rallies, which were, however, substantially bigger than the night before. The biggest, and most confrontational, protest took place last night (Monday). ONYX, a black nationalist group (who actually have a bit more influence in Oakland and generally have good relations with anarchists and other anti-capitalists), organized a “speak-out” at Oscar Grant Plaza (the site of the Occupy Oakland encampment). Following the speak-out, around 750 to a 1,000 people marched on the county jail and then onto the highway, blocking traffic at the height of rush hour. Interestingly, this action has a precedent even before the LA highway shutdown the day before. This same stretch of highway was the site of another blockade during the California student movement in 2010, when a crowd of 150 blocked traffic and were arrested. This time however, there was only one arrest, displaying a tactical improvement on the part of the protesters. Another highway blockade also occurred Monday night in Houston, Texas. In Oakland, after the crowd dispersed from the highway, marchers snaked around town for a few hours, ultimately ending up back downtown. At this point, the most intense confrontations yet occurred between marchers and police, as well as significant property destruction. Several people were arrested.

Video από τη διαδήλωση στο Leblon:

Last Wednesday, thousands of people made a protest on the street of Governor of Rio de Janeiro, Sérgio Cabral Filho. The protesters denounced corruption in the management Cabral, stroke of public money, the removals of poor neighborhoods on behalf of mega events, the extermination of the youth in the slums and the attack on the indigenous peoples. The protesters walked through the streets of Leblon, one of the world’s most expensive neighborhoods. Just A few metres from the casa de Cabral, PMs did not hesitate to attack. But as has happened repeatedly, resisted bravely and faced the troops of fascist state repression.

For three nights in a row there have been heavy riots in Hamburg-Altona. On Thursday evening a mob attacked policemen. Last night they burned cars and hurled stones.

About 150 young people gathered Friday night in Chemnitz Street and in Holsten Street. “They wanted to let loose,” said a police spokesman. First the rioters only lit firecrackers; later they torched cars.

In Karl Wolff Street a car was completely gutted. Another car was set on fire in Hospital Street, but was able to be extinguished. Some time later the tires of another car were burning. More than 100 police officers were out in force. They used pepper spray against the rioters. In response the mob hurled stones at the officers. A 21-year-old man was arrested.

The following night on Sunday again around 80 young people gathered in Holsten Street, and fireworks were ignited again — luckily nothing more happened on the third night of riots. “The situation has become very calm,” said the spokesman for Hamburg police on Sunday morning.

The riots started on Thursday night when a group of youths blinded car drivers with a laser pointer. The police moved in – and suddenly saw a group of over 150 people moving towards them. 16 rioters were detained.

There was an aggressive mood and the situation escalated.

The fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman took place on the night of February 26, 2012, in SanfordFloridaUnited States. Martin was a 17-year-old African American high school student. George Zimmerman, a 28-year-old multi-racial Hispanic American, was the neighborhood watch coordinator for the gated community where Martin was temporarily staying and where the shooting took place.Zimmerman was tried for second-degree murder and manslaughter and found not guilty on Saturday, July 13, 2013.

Statements given by Zimmerman have indicated that on the night of the shooting Zimmerman was in his vehicle on a personal errand when he noticed Martin walking beyond the gated fence inside the community. Statements read that Zimmerman then called the Sanford Police Department to report Martin’s actions as suspicious, saying “This guy looks like he’s up to no good, or he’s on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around, looking about” and “looking at all the houses”,[8][9] although according to a police report, there was “no indication that Trayvon Martin was involved in any criminal activity at the time of the encounter”.While still on the phone with the police dispatcher, Zimmerman exited his vehicle, and after concluding his telephone call with police, was involved in a violent encounter with Martin. The encounter ended with Zimmerman fatally shooting Martin once in the heart at close range.

It has been decided: black life isn’t worth shit. Let’s not ask for justice: let’s make it happen ourselves.
